APPLIED LEARNING MODULE (APLM)

Adult Students

Social Innovations for Future Change @ Ngee Ann Polytechnic

Similar to last year,  students were given the opportunity to explore the different societal issues present in our community in this module. Students also discovered how recent innovations could be the key to tackling these issues. Through simulations and in-depth discussions,  students were inspired to think about how they, too, could make a difference as global citizens.

SOCIAL INNOVATIONS FOR FUTURE CHANGE

Ngee Ann Polytechnic
23rd-25th May 2021

In March 2021, selected Sec 2 and 3 students had a taste of tertiary life as they ventured to Ngee Ann Polytechnic for a learning experience like no other.

Students gained a deeper understanding of societal issues in  the world and how countries are tackling these issues through innovation. We looked at how entrepreneurs are exploring the 3D printing of houses to tackle housing shortages, and how cheap filtration techniques are being used to provide clean drinking water in third-world countries.

Through hands-on simulations and discussions with polytechnic lecturers, our students were challenged to analyse societal issues critically and inspired to think about how they could make a difference.

We are very proud of our students for daring to take up the challenge and for living up to their role as AISS ambassadors. What better way to continue the legacy of Encik Ahmad Ibrahim - the man who dared to dream, serve, and work for a better Singapore.

NEWS REPORTING IN THE 21ST CENTURY

As part of their experience in the Advanced Elective Module (AEM) “News Reporting in the 21st Century” organised by Republic Polytechnic, our students had the opportunity to learn the ropes of news reporting from a lecturer who had rich experience working for different media companies. The students learnt what it takes to be a journalist, and developed their socio-cultural awareness through interactive activities during the 30-hr module. They were introduced to important concepts such as discrimination, prejudice and miscommunication. Our students also learnt how to develop and create a news package that is both culturally sensitive and engaging to different audiences and stakeholders. All these helped them learn about what it takes to deliver the news that we are scrolling on our mobile phones everyday and what it takes to be an outstanding reporter in this fast paced world which is proliferated with fake news.
